Volume 3 of the “What’s Current Scooby-Doo? ” DVD collection, is one of thhe better volumes out there. It contains four episodes from the television series, and the monsters featured in them are the classic Halloween stuff. I liked the DVD becomes the episodes weren’t clear mysteries or tedious give-aways. Each case was different and current, with a very organized state, clever clues, and a very surprising ending. One of the best Scooby-Doo incarnations, I might say these episodes are even better than the recent “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? ” A nice volume to pick!

Even though the episodes aren’t necessarily my popular ones of the series, I do have to say that they deserve no less than a 10/10. This is a well-behaved volume the entire family would delight in!

Vol. 3 Your children will luxuriate in the frolics of the Mystery Inc Gang as they solve crimes dealing with a vampire, mummy, sea monster, and yes, a High Tech futuristic house. Ok, if you are reluctant of this movie because people grunt you that its really gory/sex-oriented, then I feel you should search for it for yourself. I was severely disapointed on how dinky this made me cringe. Yes, there is sex. Yes, there is gore. But NO, its not as awful as everyone says…unless you are easily grossed out. There is probably one sex-like scene that made me squint, but otherwise nothing is that poor in this. The worst you will contemplate as far as nudity is concerned is female breasts and butts…there are a few questionable parts though (the spider-woman’s consume of her vaginal state for where she removes webbing) .

The gore factor isn’t as awful as people say. If you really want gore, then behold some of the Hentai titles like Midnight Panther, or Demon Beast Invasion and this will seem like child’s play.

PLOT:

The legend isn’t that dreadful, but it tends to lean towards female abuse and/or taking advantage of the female body. The ending is what made me support the DVD because it seemed like it leaned away from the over-used sex scenes and towards an sincere anecdote.

The DVD is estimable, and it offers a lengthly interview with the director, bios on the characters, and the unusual trailer. The menu is also easily navicable, which is a plus for these types of movies. Also, as usual, the Japanese and English versions are available with the Japanese version creaming the dub as far as quality.

OVERALL:

To sum this movie/dvd up, I would say its like Ninja Scroll with sex and demons instead of nudity and ninjas. I would earn this DVD is you are a fan of Ninja Scroll, Demon City Shinjuku, or a Wind Named Amnesia.

When Irascible City (also called Supernatural Monster City) was recent, it was very impressive for its time. As anime evolves, a lot of what once made this anime stand out — its adult theme, unique demons, and situation twists — have become stereotypical standbys of the genre. While not as classic as such seminal movies as Akira, Injurious City unruffled had a lot to offer anime fans.

The biggest flaw this movie has is its absolutely poor English dubbing, which manage to flatten out all titillating charactization, lose significant set details, mangle other state details, and criminally distort great of the dialogue’s sincere meaning. (The English dubbed version of Scandalous City drops the rating to one star.) If you shriek on hearing it in English, at least turn on the English subtitles as well so you can look what you’re not hearing. Better yet, unprejudiced leave it in Japanese with English subtitles.

Be warned, this is an adult movie. There’s sex, violence, rape, and at least one monster that will create male viewers gulp and heinous their legs. Some of it’s gratuitous (and some of it’s tame in comparison to films like Urotsukidoji), but viewers who are okay with these kinds of topics will earn distinguished to savor.

CITY OF VIOLENCE (aka: Jjakpae) is the 4th film by acclaimed action director Seung-Wan Ryoo (Arahan, Crying Fist) . His films usually have that commercial appeal which is why they have enjoyed more success in most other countries in Asia than in South Korea itself. “City of Violence” is no exception, as with most martial arts films, it may have more “Style over substance” but no one can divulge that it is very bright and quite intense that this film is worth a gape.

A Seoul cop named Taesu (Du-hong Jung, Fighter in the Wind, Arahan) is summoned help to his hometown to succor a funeral for an weak high school buddy named Wang Jae. Once there, he runs into two more of his ragged group, Pilho(Beum-Su Lee) and Seok Hwan( Ryoo Seung-Wan) . The four apparently forged their bear lives; Taesu is a cop, Wang Jae gave up being a gang boss for his family and gave the reins to Pil-ho(who outgrew his goofy kid image), but Seok Hwan, quiet likes to inaugurate fisticuffs. Pil-ho assures Taesu that he owns the town and he will net to the bottom of Jae’s execute. However, “City of Violence” succeeds in the action/fight scenes as well as its visual style that I forgave its shortcomings. The fight scenes (choreographed by Du-Hong, actor who played Taesu) are very well done and limits the utilize of wires/CGI. Bloody and hard-hitting, the fights are well-executed that the style has a touch of realism and doesn’t lose its humanity. Camera work gives you an observational perspective, so you can eye all the action. The atmosphere has that “noirish coolness” and coupled with very nifty scenes with the different “themed” gangs (looks like it was modeled after “The Warriors”;ex. Cheerleaders, bikeriders, etc.) And the music at the climax is reminiscent of the Eastwood’s “spaghetti westerns”. All the formulas blend well to give us a very frosty action movie.

I have the 2-disc region-3 edition from CJ entertainment. The presentation is exceptional which is why Korean dvds are expensive. I heard the Dragon Dynasty release will exercise the same transfer and may carry an English dubbed track. (I bewitch to search for it in novel Korean language)

PICTURE/AUDIO: 1.78 anamorphic widescreen. Near-flawless record transfer. Vibrant colors, orderly and engrossing with strong solid blacks in the scenes where needed. 5.1 Dolby/DTS-ES in Korean, English subtitles are very proper. If you’re equipped, DTS track is the device to go because it is very much and crisp. You hear the impact of the punches more clearly.

IN CLOSING:

“City of Violence” may not be wholly unusual, but it is proof that a film doesn’t need to be one to assure an intense and attractive experience. It is fast-paced and definitely delivers in the action/fight scenes. It is exactly what action-buffs have clamored for in a long time!

RECOMMENDED! For action fans. (4 stars)

“The City of Violence” is surprisely favorable and pays homage to a handful of films and maybe video games. As remarkable as I enjoyed this film there is ultimately powerful more tedious it is probably determined, but the film leaves no time for the formulate sage, which may disappoint the one hand, since there are hardly any surprises, at the same time one feels but also safe hands and can be fully applied to the optical review and musical values of the film.

This epic entails Tae-Su (Doo-Hong Jung) who works as a policeman in Seoul, due to the abolish of a old-fashioned schoolmate after many years in his home town returns, only to realize that things have changed fundamentally. There are now brutal youth gangs, the night the roads dangerous and Tae-Su presumed to be stuck slow the assassinate. This film ultimately reminded me of a revenge tale in the cool’70s style, with valid martial-arts sequences, which I have seen from Korea. The music selection is exemplary; it falls between hip-hop, Western scores and jazz is icy, rush 93 minutes in length with very crisp, glowing retro style that contributes to the atmosphere. Leading actors Doo-Hong Jung (Tae-Su) can be fully convincing and shows us the best performance of his career. Ultimately, again a film that offers very cramped that is original, but at least his exemplary quotes parade passed, and guaranteed an audience.

Like I stated before the musty point of this film is the anecdote itself which is told too hastily. Of course, there is also a city gangsters and consequently many situations, with words no longer distinct, but hand edges, and billets of action which is exactly why The City of Violence is worth seeing.

The dwelling is well worth the $79 if you are a fan of Russian Cinema like I am. This spot remains one of my favorites and it is really worth looking into.

Alexander Nevsky is a spellbinding pro-Soviet propaganda fraction partially intended as a warning to Hitler at the time not to invade Russia. The chronicle battle on the frozen lake is justly famed and the sheer scope of the logistics of filming are impressive. Some of the characters are somewhat cliche stock creations of the time including the two soldiers fighting for the esteem of one woman who must reveal themselves in battle, but overall it’s a modest success.

The genuine prize in this three film Criterion position however is of course Ivan the Abominable parts 1 and 2, a big masterpiece, Eisenstein’s most “savory” film(s) and indeed one of the oddest works to emerge from Soviet cinema of the time. Highly expressionistic visuals combine with a melodramatic (and slightly revisionist) lift of Ivan’s life to manufacture one of the stranger filmic experiences one will peek. Eisenstein clearly had a very highly developed visual style and the numerous crude close-ups of faces are fabulous as are the sets and costumes. Piece 2 doesn’t quite live up to the promise of share 1 but nevertheless brings the characters to an appropriate conclusion. Bizarrely silly (perhaps unintentionally at times) Ivan is nevertheless a film more for afficionados than for the casual viewer looking for another classic in the mould of Casablanca.

Regarding the transfers, they are worthy and anyone expecting better prints is simply not being realistic regarding the age of the material and the conditions in which they were kept. While not as pristine looking as other current releases of 40’s films on DVD such as Shadow of a Doubt or Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday they are more than adequate considering given the circumstances.

The dinky Aussie burg of Berkelely receives a deadly rain of meteorites, turning people hit by the celestial stones into the walking listless. It doesn’t hold long for our main characters to assemble in the obligatory isolated farmhouse to spin out the plague of zombies.

All of our familiar friends are holed up here from the loony cops, changeable pregnant waitress, her clueless boyfriend, misunderstood beauty queen, and badass fisherman (whose fashion taste takes after Torgo from MANOS, THE HANDS OF FATE) . Our sympathies are tied to the multiple-barrel shotgun wielding fisherman Marion (Mungo McKay) and the fair Rene (Felicity Mason) . The pair carves a swath through a seemingly endless supply of reanimated corpses only to come by that zombies aren’t the chunky extent of their worries.

Comparing UNDEAD to Australia’s other well-known zombie film, Monotonous ALIVE, is a tempting albeit simplistic temptation. It’s upright that both films piece similarities in their exhaust of the walking stupid and barrels of unfounded blood but what the pair allotment most is their gross sense of humour. The excessive gore, kinetic camerawork, and odd action mix well with the sinister genre antics. Hopefully this wonderfully comic film is a note of things to approach from the Spierig brothers.

UNDEAD is slated for release by Lion’s Gate Films while already on DVD in Australia.

This movie is hugely engrossing and the best homage to Night of the

Living Dumb, Terrible Taste and The Rotten Monotonous ever made. When strange

weather phenomena occurs in a shrimp Australian town, zombies start

appearing. A puny group of people raze up in a house to fight them off

but have to fight their draw out as one of them needs medical attention.

The rest of the movie is spent on fighting the zombies and revealing

their origin. The gore and blood are plentiful and first rate. The

effects are mostly “genuine” and cgi is at a minimum. There is comedy

throughout but is more of the dry, Aussie/Brit variety so is not

overwhelming or overly dull. It made me laugh out loud on mamy

occasions. The dialogue is heavenly witty and there are many memorable

and quotable lines. There is also a nice twist towards the slay of the

story and a worthy accomplish that wraps it up, while unruffled leaving ot open

for a deserved sequel.

Directed by Brian DePalma and adapted from two novels by Edwin Torres, who objective happens to be a contemplate in the Fresh York Supreme Court, the screenwriter, David Keopp, did a improbable job of bringing this epic to the veil. Carlito really tries to go straight, and even re-ignites a flame with his veteran girlfriend. He’s working as a manager of a nightclub and saving his money. Supposedly, if he can rep together $70,000, he’d be able to recede to a Caribbean Island and hurry a car dealership. That’s his dream. And I found myself wishing it would happen.

Naturally there are complications. The mob is fervent. And so is the lawyer. And Carlito is drawn into another crime, this one with dire consequences. The ending is inevitable.

The film moved speedy, the record was tight and well constructed, and I felt actual emotion for Carlito and the hard choices he had to do. The anecdote was dwelling in the 1970s and I loved the soundtrack of all the feeble music too.

As an added bonus, there was a astonishing special on the DVD about the making of the film. There are interviews with the assume who wrote the original and he talks about it being based on his bear experiences growing up Puerto Rican in Fresh York. We also hear from the screenwriter and the stars themselves. All this really added to my enjoyment of the film.

In one of his best performances ever, Al Pacino is the engine that keeps “Carlito’s Blueprint” bright from beginning to demolish. Recently-released from prison, Carlos Brigante (played marvelously by Pacino) is a mature Puerto Rican drug lord who ruled Fresh York City’s drug world during the 1960’s and 1970’s. Assisted by his lawyer (Sean Penn) Pacino is positive to pause out of the trade that landed him in prison in the first spot. However, as usual distress always lurks in every corner.

Deciding to recall and operate a Latin nightclub from an owner who is seriously in debt (played by the notorious Argentine comedian Jorge Porcel, who had a cult following throughout Latin America due to his sexually-charged comedy skit explain “A La Cama Con Porcel; he is know as the Latin-version of “Benny Hill”) . Yet as old-fashioned faces reemerge onto the scene, newer faces have also started to hold a foothold in Brigante’s musty empire, especially Benny Blanco (played by the ever-wonderful John Leguizamo) .

Directed by Brian de Palma (”Carrie”), this is one of the most realistic, and historic apt pictures of life in Unusual York City’s urban jungle during the slack 1970’s/early 1980’s. Penelope Ann Miller (”Adventures in Babysitting” is spacious as Brigante’s cherish interest, and Luis Guzman always is a scene-stealer playing Pacino’s right-hand man.

The DVD version contains production notes, cast biographies, and the unique theatrical trailer and the sound and characterize quality are superior. Pacino (a Bronx native) masters a perfect Puerto Rican accent in the same blueprint he mastered his Cuban-emigre accent in “Scarface”. “Carlito’s Draw” is guaranteed to preserve you entertained due to thrilling performances by the entire cast, astonishing cinematography, astronomical directing, and most importantly, improbable realism. Destined to become a unique urban classic.

Clarification: ALL seasons included.
Contrary to some confused reviewers, all six seasons will be included in this collection. Since the newest season is not yet complete, they can not list a synopsis in the product description. That being said, Lost is the most original and creative television series of all time, and I’m sure this collection will be bursting with easter eggs and plenty of behind the scenes info for die hard fans. I love Lost!!

Great deal
In my opinion LOST is one of the greatest shows ever made. On the surface it is great cinematography, dialogue, and action providing great entertainment. Beyond that deep character development and a mysterious, intricate plot adds so many more levels of enjoyment. It is the only show I’ve ever watched that has really made me think about such topics as philosophy and mythology and inspired me to crack open academic books I probably never would have otherwise. LOST is a show I think anyone can enjoy. Additionally, at a little less than $25 per season of hour long episodes (for the dvds, about $32 for the blu-rays) this box set is quite a steal.

the best show, ever?
i know this is a pre-review, but, barring some glaring technical glitch, this will be a truly great set. LOST is a show unlike any other in the history of the medium. not only is it a great show, with inspired acting, inspiring music, gorgeous photography, and trippy storylines… not only does it have deep characterizations and an even deeper mythology… not only is it cinematic in scope yet intimate in the smallest character moments… not only is it, like, totally addicting. it’s also the first time (at least here in the u.s.) that a t.v. series has a complete beginning, middle and end, just as the creators intended it.

so many shows start out brilliantly, chug along for a while on that inspiration, then start to peter out somewhere along the way and then… stop (twin peaks). or, are episodic in nature and don’t have the burden of having to *end* properly. but LOST started off with a bang, settled in with the characters and their predicament, started to repeat itself *just* a bit, then decided that it needed to end at a certain point and started it’s long steady march toward it’s denouement. and it’s been nothing but greatness ever since.

it’s often said that movies are like short stories, and t.v. is more like a novel.

well, we have our first truly great novel.

Lost: Season One
Along with Desperate Housewives, Lost was one of the two breakout shows in the fall of 2004. Mixing suspense and action with a sci-fi twist, it began with a thrilling pilot episode in which a jetliner traveling from Australia to Los Angeles crashes, leaving 48 survivors on an unidentified island with no sign of civilization or hope of imminent rescue. That may sound like Gilligan’s Island meets Survivor, but Lost kept viewers tuning in every Wednesday night–and spending the rest of the week speculating on Web sites–with some irresistible hooks (not to mention the beautiful women). First, there’s a huge ensemble cast of no fewer than 14 regular characters, and each episode fills in some of the back story on one of them. There’s a doctor; an Iraqi soldier; a has-been rock star; a fugitive from justice; a self-absorbed young woman and her brother; a lottery winner; a father and son; a Korean couple; a pregnant woman; and others. Second, there’s a host of unanswered questions: What is the mysterious beast that lurks in the jungle? Why do polar bears and wild boars live there? Why has a woman been transmitting an SOS message in French from somewhere on the island for the last 16 years? Why do impossible wishes seem to come true? Are they really on a physical island, or somewhere else? What is the significance of the recurring set of numbers? And will Kate ever give up her bad-boy fixation and hook up with Jack? Lost did have some hiccups during the first season. Some plot threads were left dangling for weeks, and the “oh, it didn’t really happen” card was played too often. But the strong writing and topnotch cast kept the show a cut above most network TV. The best-known actor at the time of the show’s debut was Dominic Monaghan, fresh off his stint as Merry the Hobbit in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films. The rest of the cast is either unknowns or “where I have I seen that face before” supporting players, including Matthew Fox and Evangeline Lilly, who are the closest thing to leads. Other standouts include Naveen Andrews, Terry O’Quinn (who’s made a nice career out of conspiracy-themed TV shows), Josh Holloway, Jorge Garcia, Yunjin Kim, Maggie Grace, and Emilie de Ravin, but there’s really not a weak link in the cast. Lost: Season Two
What was in the Hatch? The cliffhanger from season one of Lost was answered in its opening sequences, only to launch into more questions as the season progressed. That’s right: Just when you say “Ohhhhh,” there comes another “What?” Thankfully, the show’s producers sprinkle answers like tasty morsels throughout the season, ending with a whopper: What caused Oceanic Air Flight 815 to crash in the first place? As the show digs into more revelations about its inhabitant’s pasts, it also devotes a good chunk to new characters (Hey, it’s an island; you never know who you’re going to run into.) First, there are the “Tailies,” passengers from the back end of the plane who crashed on the other side of the island. Among them are the wise, God-fearing ex-drug lord Mr. Eko (standout Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje); devoted husband Bernard (Sam Anderson); psychiatrist Libby (Cynthia Watros, whose character has more than one hidden link to the other islanders); and ex-cop Ana Lucia (Michelle Rodriguez), by far the most infuriating character on the show, despite how much the writers tried to incur sympathy with her flashback. Then there are the Others, first introduced when they kidnapped Walt (Malcolm David Kelley) at the end of season one. Brutal and calculating, their agenda only became more complex when one of them (played creepily by Michael Emerson) was held hostage in the hatch and, quite handily, plays mind games on everyone’s already frayed nerves. The original cast continues to battle their own skeletons, most notably Locke (Terry O’Quinn), Sun (Yunjin Kim) and Michael (Harold Perrineau), whose obsession with finding Walt takes a dangerous turn. The love triangle between Jack (Matthew Fox), Kate (Evangeline Lilly) and Sawyer (Josh Holloway), which had stalled with Sawyer’s departure, heats up again in the second half. Despite the bloating cast size (knocked down by a few by season’s end) Lost still does what it does best: explores the psyche of people, about whom “my life is an open book” never applies, and cracks into the social dynamics of strangers thrust into Lord of the Flies-esque situations. Is it all a science experiment? A dream? A supernatural pocket in the universe? Likely, any theory will wind up on shaky ground by the season’s conclusion. But hey, that’s the fun of it. This show was made for DVD, and you can pause and slow-frame to your heart’s content. Just try and keep that.—Ellen Kim

Lost: Season Three
When it aired in 2006-07, Lost’s third season was split into two, with a hefty break in between. This did nothing to help the already weirdly disparate direction the show was taking (Kate and Sawyer in zoo cages! Locke eating goop in a mud hut!), but when it finally righted its course halfway through–in particular that whopper of a finale–the drama series had left its irked fan base thrilled once again. This doesn’t mean, however, that you should skip through the first half of the season to get there, because quite a few questions find answers: what the Others are up to, the impact of turning that fail-safe key, the identity of the eye-patched man from the hatch’s video monitor. One of the series’ biggest curiosities from the past–how Locke ended up in that wheelchair in the first place–also gets its satisfying due. (The episode, “The Man from Tallahassee,” likely was a big contributor to Terry O’Quinn’s surprising–but long-deserved–Emmy win that year.) Unfortunately, you do have to sit through a lot of aforementioned nuisances to get there. Season 3 kicks off with Jack (Matthew Fox), Kate (Evangeline Lilly), and Sawyer (Josh Holloway) held captive by the Others; Sayid (Naveen Andrews), Sun (Yunjin Kim), and Jin (Daniel Dae Kim) on a mission to rescue them; and Locke, Mr. Eko (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), and Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick) in the aftermath of the electromagnetic pulse that blew up the hatch. Spinning the storylines away from base camp alone wouldn’t have felt so disjointed were it not for the new characters simultaneously being introduced. First there’s Juliet, a mysterious member of the Others whose loyalty constantly comes into question as the season goes on. Played delicately by Elizabeth Mitchell (Gia, ER, Frequency), Juliet is in one turn a cold-blooded killer, by another turn a sympathetic friend; possibly both at once, possibly neither at all. (She’s also a terrific, albeit unwitting, threat to the Kate-Sawyer-Jack love triangle, which plays out more definitively this season.) On the other hand, there’s the now-infamous Nikki and Paulo (Kiele Sanchez and Rodrigo Santoro), a tagalong couple who were cleverly woven into the previous seasons’ key moments but came to bear the brunt of fans’ ire toward the show (Sawyer humorously echoed the sentiments by remarking, “Who the hell are you?”). By the end of the season, at least two major characters die, another is told he/she will die within months, major new threats are unveiled, and–as mentioned before–the two-part season finale restores your faith in the series. The extras are as well-stocked as a Dharma Initiative food pantry on this seven-disc set. Commentaries by producer Damon Lindelof, show writers, and numerous cast members reveal a whole lot of juicy trivia; plus, the DVDs even provide a subtitle track for the commentary (rarely seen other than on foreign-language director’s commentaries) so you won’t miss a thing. “Lost Book Club” goes through the parallels between what characters are reading and the show’s storylines (The Wizard of Oz and Stephen King are heavily referenced). “Lost: On Location” gives a lot of insight to some of the biggest episodes, and “Lost in a Day” gives a 24-hour glimpse at the drama’s arduous production. If you’re a Lost fan who gave up during this season, the bonus features alone might lure you back for the next round. –Ellen A. Kim

Lost: Season Four
Season four of Lost was a fine return to form for the series, which polarized its audience the year before with its focus on The Others and not enough on our original crash victims. That season’s finale introduced a new storytelling device–the flash-forward–that’s employed to great effect this time around; by showing who actually got off the island (known as the Oceanic Six), the viewer is able to put to bed some longstanding loose ends. As the finale attests, we see that in the future Jack (Matthew Fox) is broken, bearded, and not sober, while Kate (Evangeline Lilly) is estranged from Jack and with another guy (the identity may surprise you). Four others do make it back to their homes, but as the flash-forwards show, it’s definitely not the end of their connection to the island. Back in present day, however, the islanders are visited by the denizens of a so-called rescue ship, who have agendas of their own. While Jack works with the newcomers to try to get off the island, Locke (Terry O’Quinn), with a few followers of his own, forms an uneasy alliance with Ben (Michael Emerson) against the suspicious gang. Some episodes featuring the new characters feel like filler, but the evolution of such characters as Sun and Jin (Yunjin Kim and Daniel Dae Kim) is this season’s strength; plus, the love story of Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick) and Penny (Sonya Walger) provides some of the show’s emotional highlights. As is the custom with Lost, bullets fly and characters die (while others may or may not have). Moreover, the fate of Michael (Harold Perrineau), last seen traitorously sailing off to civilization in season two, as well as the flash-forwards of the Oceanic Six, shows you never quite leave the island once you’ve left. There’s a force that pulls them in, and it’s a hook that keeps you watching. Season four was a shorter 13 episodes instead of the usual 22 due to the 2008 writers’ strike; nonetheless, the set comes with two discs of extras. One of the best features is “LOST in 8:15,” which is a rapid-fire summation of the series thus far in eight minutes, 15 seconds. Narrated by a hilariously droll female, it includes lines such as “Jack meets Kate. Kate stitches up Jack. They bond.” and “They see Jack play football with Mr. Friendly. Mr. Friendly throws like a girl.” The featurette “The Right to Bear Arms” takes a fun look at the prop masters responsible for supplying the castaways with guns–and keeping track of who has one and who doesn’t (best here is Sawyer’s (Josh Holloway) assertion that characters often cock their guns just to look cool). Cast members Lilly, Garcia, Yunjin Kim, and Daniel Dae Kim provide a few of the commentaries, and the set even comes with an amusing safety guide for Oceanic Airlines. (Example: “if you notice black smoke emanating from the plane, please alert the captain. It is either a problem with the engines or a mysterious creature.”) Finally, for those who bought the standard-def DVD, take a closer look at the front cover after you’ve removed the O-sleeve; you’ll notice the entire cast has been blacked out save for a few: the Oceanic Six. –Ellen A. Lost: Season Five
Since Lost made its debut as a cult phenomenon in 2004, certain things seemed inconceivable. In its fourth year, some of those things, like a rescue, came to pass. The season ended with Locke (Terry O’Quinn) attempting to persuade the Oceanic Six to return, but he dies before that can happen–or so it appears–and where Jack (Matthew Fox) used to lead, Ben (Emmy nominee Michael Emerson) now takes the reins and convinces the survivors to fulfill Locke’s wish. As producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse state in their commentary on the fifth-season premiere, “We’re doing time travel this year,” and the pile-up of flashbacks and flash-forwards will make even the most dedicated fan dizzy. Ben, Jack, Hurley (Jorge Garcia), Sayid (Naveen Andrews), Sun (Yunjin Kim), and Kate (Evangeline Lilly) arrive to find that Sawyer (Josh Holloway) and Juliet (Elizabeth Mitchell) have been part of the Dharma Initiative for three years. The writers also clarify the roles that Richard (Nestor Carbonell) and Daniel (Jeremy Davies) play in the island’s master plan, setting the stage for the prophecies of Daniel’s mother, Eloise Hawking (Fionnula Flanagan), to play a bigger part in the sixth and final season. Dozens of other players flit in and out, some never to return. A few, such as Jin (Daniel Dae Kim), live again in the past. Lost could’ve wrapped things up in five years, as The Wire did, but the show continues to excite and surprise. As Lindelof and Cuse admit in the commentary, there’s a “fine line between confusion and mystery,” adding, “it makes more sense if you’re drunk.” Other extras include deleted scenes, featurettes, a “lost” episode of Mysteries of the Universe, and commentary from writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz on “He’s Our You,” a reference to Sayid, who tries to change the future by changing the past. –Kathleen C. War of the Worlds has been on DVD before, but it’s noteworthy better in this special edition, restored and presented, thankfully, in chubby frame, as it was shot. The print quality is unbiased gorgeous, and the movie looks as kindly as it’s ever looked. Special features are also of a high standard: especially welcome are the commentaries by stars Ann Robinson and Gene Barry. Barry seems a miniature less in teach than Robinson, but she graciously compensates, by eloquently describing her experiences, her affection for Barry and producer George Pal, and the film itself, with which she seems wonderfully familiar. Her insight is detailed, sometimes comic, exhaustive, and genuinely revealing–even down to the revelation of a cameo by Woody Woodpecker. Images are so crisp that the wires supporting the ships are sometimes sadly visible, but fans will be so caught up in the ghastly fable that this won’t matter considerable at all. For those who savor this film, I’d say accumulate out there and rob this up: someone got it just, and went to the exertion to display this admired film in an edition that can really be called “special”. What a pleasure to glimpse old-fashioned Technicolor the map it was meant to be seen! A tremendous movie, and a large DVD.

Based on H.G. Wells’ classic recent, George Pal’s The War Of The Worlds is a classic in its acquire factual. The movie transfers the memoir from England and the turn of the century to California and the 1950’s. Some people notice the paranoia of the ’50s in the movie but the original also had a strong theme of fright of things beyond our ken. Pal often included a religious theme in his movies and this film would have been better without it, but it does not detract from the movie enough to retain it from being a classic. The narrative is that of an invasion of Earth by coldly incandescent Martians. Told in definite, plucky strokes with exceptional special effects (for the time) and glorious performances by the two leads, Gene Barry and Ann Robinson, The War Of The Worlds should be in every collection of science fiction movies.

The DVD transfer is honorable. The describe is interesting and positive. The color is strong and rich, as Technicolor should be. Like most people, I had only seen this movie on television and it never looked as beneficial as it does on DVD. The narrate resolution is so great that you can easily peer the wires supporting the Martian war machines. The sound does not measure up to the standard of the video. It is mono and there are cracks and pops on the sound track during the early fraction of the movie, though I didn’t seek them as worthy in the later scenes (but that may simply be because I was caught up in the excitement of the fable) . The disk provides only a trailer as supplemental material (I don’t deem scene selection to be a special feature, it should be standard on any DVD) . The disk is formatted in TV standard but that is not significantly different from the movie’s recent ratio, since it was not shot in what we now call widescreen.

Although I would have liked to recognize more supplemental material, this is detached a sparkling DVD of a nearly fifty year primitive movie that has not received the special treatment of movies like The Wizard Of Oz.
